DBS checks are an official record that reveals a person’s criminal convictions. These checks help employers make the right hiring decisions.
DBS checks are particularly important when looking for candidates who can work with children and vulnerable groups. An employer can request a copy of the DBS certificate to determine the next steps after completing the check.
What is DBS?

DBS stands for Disclosure and Barring Service and it is sponsored by the Home Office.

This service processes and issues checks that help recruiters make better decisions about who they hire. It was previously called the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).
Types of DBS checks

There are three levels to DBS checks: standard, basic and enhanced. To ensure employees undergo proper screening, it is important to be familiar with the levels.
What is a DBS check basic?

Employers and individuals can request a basic DBS check to check their criminal records. This is the lowest level of check available and is open to all UK citizens and employers. Basic DBS checks a person’s criminal record, convictions, and cautions using the Police National Computer (PNC).

Employers in all industries can request a basic disclosure to verify a candidate’s criminal history to determine if they are suitable for the job. For certain positions, however, you might need a more thorough DBS check.
What is a DBS standard check?

Employers use a standard DBS check to verify that applicants are qualified for the job. It shows all warnings, cautions, and reprimands that a person has received. It will also show any unconvictions on a person’s criminal records in England and Wales, as well as convictions in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Lawyers, accountants, and others with high-level responsibility are required to undergo the Standard DBS Check. This will verify that candidates and employees have not been convicted of fraud or other financial crimes.
What is an enhanced DBS Check?

This level of DBS checks is similar to the standard DBS. Employers can only request this level on behalf of their applicants. The enhanced DBS check includes all of the information found in a standard DBS.

Employers can request an enhanced check to determine if a candidate or employee is on the Children’s Barred List, or Adult First List. This allows candidates to work with vulnerable groups without being barred. However, it can only be requested if they will be participating in a regulated activity. The Enhanced DBS check is required for most roles in education or health care.
