Today, I am sharing essential style tips with guys who want to be better dressed.
You can look your best no matter what stage you are at.
1. RECONNAISSANCE: DRESSING WELL IS A SKILL
You can learn dressing well, just as cooking and shooting free throws.
My job as a personal stylist doesn’t involve buying clothes for men and sending them on their way. I teach men how they can choose clothes that will enhance them, so that they can do it themselves. If dressing well could not be taught, I would be out of work!
As with all skills, you improve the more you practice. You must get dressed every day, unless you live somewhere like a nudist colony. You have the opportunity to practice and cultivate the skill of dressing well every day.

2. DIE TO DEVELOP YOUR “EYE”, BY IDENTIFYING WHAT STYLE YOU LIKE
After guys tell me that men are not naturally stylish, I’m often followed up with:
“I just don’t have the ability to put together outfits and know what looks good.”
Here’s what they hear:
“Ok. Are there any people who have a style that you like? It’s something that you feel you would wear, even though you aren’t sure you can pull off. Perhaps it’s a celebrity or a musician? You could even think of a fictional character. Some of my clients mention Tony Stark and James Bond.
The guy will list a lot of men who he believes are cool in their clothes. I then like to point out the fact that he had just refuted his own assumption that an “eye” is not something he has. He simply showed me that he is able to see great style and recognize it.
But he may not understand the why. That’s often why men tell you they don’t have an eye. Understanding why is something that can be learned.
When you are working towards a goal it is important to recognize and challenge your own stories. You might be a shy person, don’t have the eye for style, too busy to exercise or aren’t good at it. Our stories can be invisible barriers that keep us in our comfort zones.
WHAT YOU CAN DONE TODAY: Take five minutes. In order to find the right style for you, list 3 or more men you admire. You don’t have to be able to pull this off, but list it. It could be someone you are familiar with, a celebrity, or a fictional character from a film.
3. A RIGHT FIT WILL HELP YOU GET RID OF 90% OF YOUR TYLE PROBLEMS
Great style is all about fitting well. It’s so crucial that I tell my clients, “Fitting properly will solve 90% your style problems.”
Your body proportions are affected when clothes don’t fit well. Over-sized clothes can make you look not only sloppy but also fatter and shorter.
Larger clothes for men are more flattering because they feel more comfortable or because they don’t understand how clothes should fit.
The right fit is the way Ryan Gosling (or you, or me) can look effortlessly fashionable in a plain white tee and jeans. But, it’s also how someone can look horrible in a “nice suit”, which probably costs 20x more.
This also means that you don’t need a suit to look fashionable.
If you are a leather jacket andjeans person like me, leather jacket and Jeans can still look good as long as they fit well.
4. SURROUND YOUSELF WITH STYLISH PERSONS (EVEN ONLINE).
If you are trying to make any major changes in your life (especially if it is physical, like yours), the biggest hurdle will be surprising.
It is likely that people around you (your girlfriend, family, friends and coworkers) won’t react positively to your actions.
To work with me individually as a client, I must be able to work alone. Your girlfriend or wife cannot join you on any of my sessions or shopping trips.
This rule was created after I worked with a client who insisted her wife participate in our styling sessions. She gave me feedback on all the advice I gave. The comments and notes she made were basically like this: “He doesn’t like that, but he prefers to be dressed in this.” This effectively negated any advice I gave.
He was just enabling her to be bad.
I quickly refunded him his money and made this rule after a few weeks.
People find change difficult. It forces people to confront the reality of someone trying hard to improve and it challenges their own efforts.
“You are the average five people around you,” is one of my favourite quotes. It has a tremendous impact on our behavior, mindsets, and actions.
This is why businessmen who are successful and wealthy tend to be close friends. In Instagram photos, you can see that Crossfitters with attractive bodies are surrounded in a circle of Crossfitters. This is why obese parents are more likely than others to have obese children.
You need to be confident in your own style if you want it to change. Your environment should include people with similar goals to you.
5. BE STRONG FIRST, CHOOSE A CLASSIC TYLE.
When trying to improve their personal style, people often think they must create a unique and original style.
This is an excellent example of what we call “Extreme thinking”.
Are you looking to lose 20lbs?
“Ugh. I must give up bread, rice and alcohol. Forget it”
You want to save money on your vacation?
“This means that I must cancel my Netflix account, stop going to weekends, and defer my student loan payments. If I wanted to have fun, I would probably have to skip some credit card payments. This is going to ruin my credit. I can’t relax on vacation right now.
If you want to improve your style, imagine how chefs learn to cook.
They don’t think they have to make a unique and amazing dish.
They first learn the traditional recipes and techniques. Next, they add their personal touches and interests to make them more interesting.
Your style will be the same.
The classics are the best, so you should first focus on them. Next, add your own style.
