Zimbabwe is generally a year-round destination. However, it is important to consider your primary focus in order to create the best itinerary for you. Although they can be seen throughout the year, it is easier to spot them during certain seasons. The peak travel months in Zimbabwe are less crowded than other safari destinations in Africa, even though it is an emerging destination.
Zimbabwe’s climate is subtropical. It has long hot summers and temperatures that average highs of 30degC (or 87 degrees F) and cool winters when it can drop significantly.
Seasonal timings
August – November
This is Zimbabwe’s main dry period. It’s the best time to go white water rafting or white water rafting on Zambezi Falls. However, the dry season can make for great game viewing. But, it also means peak travel times with more accommodation. These months are especially hot in the northern regions like Mana Pools.
December – April
It is a time when there is humidity, rain, and thunderstorms. The latter arrive in the afternoon and clear up by the evening. While not ideal for all travelers, the rainy seasons offer unique wildlife and scenery, perfect on your Zimbabwe safari. Western areas receive less rainfall overall.
May – July
This is a time of cooler temperatures overall. It can make it more enjoyable for those who enjoy more extreme activities. This is a more lush time with the ground drying out in July and the temperatures starting to drop in higher elevation areas.
If you are looking to see Zimbabwe, here’s a list of when to visit.
Huge Elephant Herds
In the dry season, May through October, elephants gather around waterholes and often right in front your lodge.
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls can be visited all year, but to see it at its best you must visit between February and May.
Wild Dog Pups
June through August – The wild canines will be scheming and the puppies will begin to venture out into the world at Mana Pools and Hwange.
Young Animals
From November through April, the rains arrive and the bush is alive with many young animals.
Experience is the best way to learn
Wildlife
The end of the dry season is when animals congregate near water sources. This makes for great game viewing. We recommend this time if you are looking to see wildlife. You can see the young of animals during the wetter months. This makes for some amazing and memorable sightings.
Victoria Falls
Although the best time to see this natural wonder is after the rainy seasons in April and May, the spray can sometimes obscure your view. If you go at the end the dry season (October to December), you can still see the waterfalls from the rock pools below.
Festivals
There are so many celebrations in Zimbabwe that you can enjoy. We recommend keeping a respectful distance unless invited. Harare International Festival of the Arts, which combines music, arts, and theatre, is very popular in May and June. Chimanimani Arts Festival, a three-day cultural event in the eastern highlands, is also available.
